シーン1　◆アリ−とレネのアパート ヴォンダ ♪ ... And never get love You'd better let love depart I know it's so, and yet I know I can't get you out of my heart アリー やっぱり、ボツっぽい。 I sense the ick. レネ もう？　まともにデートもしてないくせに。 Already? You haven't even had a real date yet. アリー だけど、やっぱりボツっぽい。上司だし、ボツって確認するためにデートなんて、ちょっとねえ。 I know, but I'm feeling the ick. And since he's my boss, I don't want to go out with him just to get hit with the ick. レネ じゃあ、そう言えば？ Then, tell him. アリー 彼に？ Tell him? レネ 彼に。 Tell him. アリー どうやって？ How? レネ どうやって。 How? アリー レネ。 Renee? レネ 一度デートするぐらい、いいじゃない？ Look, why don't just go through with the date? アリー ダメだって。あの人、自分を責める、そういう人よ、自分がへましたせいだって。でも、ドタキャンされても、自分のせいだって落ち込むよね。ああ、どっちがマシ？　デートで粉砕と、そのチャンスを与えないのと？ Because then he'll blame himself. I know John Cage. He'll think that he did something wrong. And if I cancel the date, then he'll think he is something wrong. シーン2　◆ケイジ＆フィッシュ事務所（翌朝） エレイン これは私の意見じゃないけど、リチャードはあなたを雇う時、月に200時間はチャージするはずだって。で、現実がこれでしょ？　私の意見じゃないけど、かなり期待外れ。 Of course, it's not a criticism from me, but I know that when Richard hired you, he was expecting you to bill two hundred hours a month. And under that yardstick, which of course isn't mine, you've been a disappointment. アリー ありがと、エレイン。 Thank you, Elaine. ジョン アリー。 Ally. アリー あら、ジョン。 Hey, John. ジョン ・・・。 アリー 中に入らなきゃ。 Better get inside.

John, John, John, John. リチャード まず最初に、大手ハンバーガーチェーンの、もっとカリッとフレンチフライは自分のアイデアだから訴えたいっていう依頼が来てる。引き受けるかどうかは保留にしたけど。 First up. Zelda Hughes wants to retain us to sue Burger King, claims this crispier taste of their french fries was all her idea. I haven't officially said yes to her. ビリー 自分のアイデアって？ What do you mean, her idea? リチャード 「フレンチフライをもっとカリッとさせるべきだ」って投書したらそうなったから、アイデアを盗用されたって。どんなもんかな？ She wrote them a letter saying their fries should be more crispy, taste better. Thinks they stole her idea. What can I say? ジョン ばかばかしい限りだ。さっさと行こう。次。 That's just stupid, Richard. Speed it up. Next. リチャード じゃ、次。画家のシーモア・リトル。新規だ。依頼の内容は・・・ Next up. Seymore Little, artist, new client. He wants to retain us ---- アリー ちょっと待って。シーモア・リトルって、あのシーモア・リトル？ Wait. Seymore Little? The Seymore Little? リチャード そうだけど。で、依頼の内容は・・・ The very one. He wants to retain us ---- アリー 待って待って待って。彼が依頼人なの？　私、美術史とってたの。なんか夢みたい。会わせてくれる？ Oh wait, no, no, no. He, he's our client? I, I, I majored in art history. He's the Seymore Little? I get to meet him? リチャード 君に任せる。結婚したいのに、息子の許可が出ない。それで雇われた。 You can get to represent him. He wants to get married, his son won't let him, he's retained us. アリー 息子の許可って、何それ？ What do you mean, his son won't let him? リチャード 2年前に意思無能力の宣告を受けた。たしかに「ちょっと」ってかんじ。でも依頼を受けた以上、そんなことを言ってちゃ仕事にならん。彼は結婚したい。息子は、相手が金目当てだと決めつけてる。 He was deemed mentally incompetent two years ago. Evidently he's a bit of a cracker, but of course since we represent the cracker, we won't be taking that position. He wants to marry, his son thinks the woman's really after his money ---- ジョン くだらんよ！　さあ、次へ行こう。 Oh balls! Move on.

シーン4　◆リチャードのオフィス リチャード 君の悩みはどうでもいい。でも、だからって、俺にあたるのは我慢ならん。人をばかにした、さっきの態度は許しがたい。分かったな！ I won't pretend to care what's bothering you, but I do care very much as to how it affects me. That kind of blatant disrepect in there is unacceptable! You got that? ジョン すまない。 I'm sorry. リチャード 当然だ！　・・・　いいよ。前向きに。 You should be! ... Okay. Bygones. ジョン 迷いがあるらしい。 I feel a waffle. リチャード なに？ A what? ジョン 迷いだよ。撤退開始。 A waffle. She's retreating. リチャード だれ？ Who? ジョン アリーさ。感情的な抵抗が、なぜか芽ばえてるようで。 Ally. Something has occasioned her emotional recalcitrance. リチャード もう、キスってした？ Have you kissed her yet? ジョン いや、とくには。 Not really. リチャード ジョン、初デートでキスしないのは紳士でも、2度目もじゃ、へんに誤解される。 John, if you don't kiss a girl on a first date, you're a gentleman. But if you don't on a second, you're gay. ジョン いやなんだよ、ガツガツするのはさ。 I don't want to come off a predator. リチャード ね、いい？　フェミニズムだ、男女同権だ、女性の自主性だといっても、女の望みはただ1つ、奪われること。 Listen to me. All that stuff about feminism, autonomy, gender equality -- women don't really want that. They want to be taken! ジョン あそう。 They do? リチャード べつに、相手のいやがることを、むりやりやれって言ってるわけじゃないぞ。でも、先にしかける強引さは必要だ、男なんだから。 I'm not saying cave man, or do anything against her consent. But you have to initiate some aggressiveness. シーン6　◆会議室 アリー ああ、リトルさん、どうも！　アリー・マクビールと申します。なんか夢みたいです。ほんと大ファンなんです、私、あなたの作品の。 Um ... uh, Mr. Little, hi. Hi, I'm, I'm Ally McBeal. And, and this is such an honor for me, I am such a huge fan of your work. シーモア おべっかなら他所でやれ。早く弁護士をよこせ。 Tell someone who cares, and send in the lawyer, will you? アリー 私が・・・その弁護士です。 I am the lawyer. シーモア その格好でか？ Dressed like that? ポーラ シーモア。 Seymore! シーモア なんてスカートだ。ズボンがいいとボスに伝えろ。それも前チャックの付いたやつだぞ。 Well, look at the skirt. (to Ally) Go change your clothes. (to Seymore) This woman is an excellent lawyer. (to Ally) Go, go, go, go, go. アリー いや。私に任せたいなら、服装も受け入れて。 No. You want me, you take me the way I'm dressed. ビリー （入室して）　どうかした？ What's the matter? リチャード よし。ズボンです、前チャックの！　サブで付いて。以上。 Good. Pants. Penis. シーン7　◆大きいオフィススペース アリー リチャード、ちょっと待ってよ。いっそのこと、ビリーに全部・・・ Richard! Hold on a minute. Maybe we should just let Billy ---- ジョン アリー。 Ally. アリー ジョン。何かしら？ John. What's up? ジョン その、あー・・・食事、あす夜、8時、ここから出発。 Well ... Dinner, tomorrow night, eight. We'll go right from here. アリー あん・・・いいわ。 Um ... sure. ジョン よかった。 Excellent.

シーン8　◆再び、会議室 ポーラ 後見人が付いてるから本人の一存では結婚できないって、裁判所で言われて。 And since he has a legal guardian, the court says he has no capacity to consent to marriage. シーモア 息子の同意が必要なんだ。フン！ And my son won't give the consent. ポーラ 裁判所命令でなんとかできるのよね？ But we're told that we can get it by a court order. ビリー ええ、そうですね。ちょっと意地悪な質問を。お2人は60も年が離れてる。 Okay. Well, I'm going to play devil's advocate here. You're sixty years apart. シーモア 問題かね？　ハ！ ==? ポーラ 世間の常識からズレてるのは分かってるけど、彼は無能力者じゃありません。 Mr. Thomas, we know it seems silly to the outside world, but he's not incompetent. アリー 息子さんは無能力だと言ってますが？ So, why does your son say that you are? シーモア 私を言いなりにしたくて言っとるんだ。結婚して小さなギャラリーを開きたいってだけなのに、頭から反対しおって！ Because he's trying to control me. All I want to do is to get married and open a little gallery, and he won't let me!

シーン9　◆トイレ ビリー 金目当てだよ。 She wants his money. アリー たしかに、ちぐはぐな印象ぬぐえないわよね。あの2人がベッド・イン？ Well, they didn't exactly look like a perfect match. I mean ... the two of them having sex? ビリー 「ちぐはぐな印象」って言えば、君とジョン・ケイジは・・・ Speaking of strange bed fellows, you and John Cage? アリー ええ。だって、彼、意外性あって、あきないし。 Well, he, um ... he kind of surprised me. ビリー イメージできないんだよね、君らがその・・・ I can't exactly say I see you two ... アリー 彼が変だから？　好きなのほんとは、変人が。 What, because he's odd? I actually like odd. 　 　（トイレを流す音） アリー （トイレをのぞき込んで）　誰もいないわ。 There's nobody in there. ビリー 絶対、ここから聞こえたのに。 It definitely came from that stall. アリー あ、なんだ、ジョン。 Oh, hey, John. ジョン アリー。ビリー。 Ally, Billy. ビリー 調子どう？ How's it going? アリー あの、流す音がしたから、誰なのかなって・・・ Well, we heard somebody flush the toilet, so ... ジョン 僕だ。僕が流した。 Oh, I, I flushed the toilet. アリー どういうこと？ Excuse me? ジョン （ピッ）　（トイレを流す音） アリー それって・・・水洗用のリモコンなわけ？ You have ... a remote toilet flusher? ジョン 急いでて流し忘れる人もいるし、流しきれてないって場合もあるから。流したてが好きなんだ。 Sometimes people leave in haste forgetting to flush, other times == residual remnants. I like a fresh bowl. ビリー じゃあ、入ってから、自分の手で流せばいいんじゃないの？ Um, why don't you just flush the toilet before by hand? ジョン 僕は潔癖性の気があってね。目にしてしまうと、どん詰まるから。じゃ、失礼して。 My regularity is easily thrown. Unclean bowls trouble me. Well, excuse me.

シーン10　◆会議室 サム 父が正気じゃないとは言ってませんよ！　後見人になったのは、日常的な判断をくだす能力に支障が見られたからです。 The guardianship is not based on insanity. It's on incompetence to make daily decisions which necessarily affect his life. There is a difference. ビリー 分かってます。ですから、そんなにムキにならないで下さい。 I know that, and we don't have to begin on a hostile note. サム 父を不当に扱ったと責められているんです。ムキになるなと言うほうが無理でしょう。 You're accusing me of mistreating my father. It's difficult not to take that personally, Mr. Thomas. アリー お父さんは、あなたがお金を管理したがってるとおっしゃってますけど？ He thinks you're trying to control his money. Is that true? サム ええ、そうです。それが目的なわけで。父には、その能力がもうないんですよ。母に話しかけてるんです。亡くなってもう7年になるのに、話をし続けている。 Well, yes, but that's sort of the point. He's not capable of running his own affairs. He still talks to my mother. She's been dead for seven years, he has conversations with her. アリー だからって、無能力者ってことにはなりません。亡くなった人に話すのって、よくあるでしょう？ Well, that doesn't necessarily make him incompetent. Lots of people speak to the dead. サム ええ。ですが、母も話すんです。去年はボートを欲しがった。父は30万ドルのヨットを買いました。 Yes. Well, she speaks back. Last July, she asked for a boat. I do know that he's not in love with her. アリー そうだと言いきれますか？ How can you be so sure? サム 父を知ってますから。 I know my father. ビリー もっと、具体的に言うと？ Could you be more specific? サム 世の中には出会ってしまったが最後、愛し続けずにはいられない2人がいるんです。父と母が、そうでした。分かってもらえるとも、信じてほしいとも言いませんが、事実です。ある種の愛は一生、消えることがない。 There are some people who meet that somebody that they can never stop loving, no matter how hard they try. My father met that somebody. Now I wouldn't expect you to understand that or even believe it, but trust me, there are some loves that just don't go away.

シーン11　◆ビリーのオフィス アリー 亡くなった奥様との会話のことですが、判事はこれを精神的な危うさとみなすと思うんです。 Mr. Little, th-the judge might view communication with the dead person as a form of mental unfitness. シーモア 56年も連れ添ったんだ。死んでも、話したいことがあれば、そりゃ話すさ。家内も返事がしたけりゃ、する権利がある。生涯に一度の愛ってのを知らんのだな？ We were together for fifty-six years. If I want to talk to her after she is dead, I'll do it. And if she wants to talk back to me, that's her privilege. You never know the once-in-a-lifetime love, hmm? アリー だといいんですが。 I pray not. ビリー それじゃ、あの、無能力かどうかはさておき、不当威圧という問題も、当然出てきます。あなたのことですが。 All right. Other than general competency, we're also faced with undue influence. Are you depressed? ジョン え？ What? リチャード 絶望と戦うポーズ。全部お見通し。 You do that to fight despair. Do you think I don't know that? ジョン あ・・・精神統一のポーズでもあるんだけど。今のは、視床下部のアイソメトリックス。脳の求愛ニューロンを活性化させるんだ。デートの前の準備体操。 I, I, I also do it for a focus. In this case, hypothalamus isometrics. シーン13　◆法廷 ボイル判事 なぜ船を買ったんです？ Why did you buy a boat? ビリー ジョー・ディマジオは、マリリン・モンローの死後、30年にわたって毎日、花を供え続けていました。ロマンチックな逸話ですが。 Joe DiMaggio bought Marilyn Monroe flowers every single day for thirty years after her death. We call that romantic. ボイル判事 花ならね。船とはちがう。 Yes, flowers. There's a slew of anecdotal evidence. Just look at the papers before you. シーン14　◆裁判所の廊下 ポーラ 結局、どうなったの？ So, what does that mean? アリー シーモアが証人席で尋問を受けるの。ねえ、ポーラ、狙いは何？ Seymore takes the stand and undergoes questioning. Paula, what's the deal? ポーラ 何のこと？ I'm sorry? アリー あなたが美術科の学生で、だから、彼を尊敬してるのは分かる。でも、ハッキリ言わせてもらうと、この結婚は、どう考えてもにおうのよね。においの元は、あなたよ。 I, I know that you're an art student and that you ... you probably admire him. But look, I'm going to be honest with you. Come on in. ジョン 邪魔して、すまないね。 I'm loath to intrude. ビリー どうした？ What's up? ジョン ご存じのように、アリーとのデートがもう目の前だ。 As you know, I'm on the precipice of a date with Ally. ビリー それで？ And? ジョン 僕の不安は増すばかり。ここは思いきってキスすべきか、その、某女性誌を参考に読んでみたところ、女性は、いとも簡単にアレと結びつけるらしい。キスのへたな男はベッドでのテクニックもおそまつだって。同調する気はさらさらないが、でも・・・ダ液が出すぎる傾向にある者としては、とても心配で。 I'm fraught with anxiety. Should I endeavor to kiss her? Well, according to Cosmopolitan magazine, women draw significant conclusions about a man's potential technique as a lover simply by the way he kisses. And I'm not saying I agree with an excess, but being proned to high saliva secretions, I'm ... シーン34　◆法廷。最終弁論 サムの代理人 すでに書面にて提出しておりますように、財政的な面からも厳しいものがありまして、リトル氏に新しくギャラリーを開かせる余裕はないんです。 We have provided the court with substantial documentation showing the financial hardship to the estate if Mr. Little were allowed to open a gallery, display his recent work ---- ビリー 地役権です。 It's servitude! サムの代理人 氏の利益を守る・・・ It's protecting his interest ---- ビリー 後見関係の前提は・・・ Guardianship doesn't presuppose ---- サムの代理人 後見関係の前提は無能力です！　・・・　できれば言いたくなかったんですが、そちらがそう出た以上は、仕方がない。これは、氏の能力的な問題です。ギャラリーを開くことを許可すれば、ひたすた描き続けた、亡き奥さんの絵が世に出ます。駄作ばかりが。過去に傷がつき、せっかくの名声も地に落ちる。息子さんは、お父さんをそんな目に会わせたくないだけなんです。世界中の芸術家の卵が、彼に憧れている。それを壊すのは、やめましょう。守らせて下さい。 Guardianship presupposes his incompetence! ...
